Guizot as a man of letters than some other critics do; the romanticists called his style pci/eux, and M. E. Scherer goes so far as to say, M. Guizot n'a jamais �t� un �crivain, ou, si l'on aime mieux, il n'a �t� que le premier des �crivains qui ne savent pas la langue. This rouses ste-beuve's indignation, and he appeals in reply to the brilliant character-sketches with which the M�moires pour servir abound. Some of his earlier work is, no doubt, deficient both in finish and in descriptive power; even the present essay now and then furnishes an illustration of the maxim, tout ce qui n'est pas clair n'est pas fran�ais.
