Learn how American politics affect public policy.

Adopting a public policy approach to American politics, Government in America looks at government’s impact on the daily lives of Americans. This text introduces the main features of American politics and asks “how should we govern?” and “what should government do?” In looking at the evolving nature of our democracy and the changing scope of our government, Government in America helps students see that politics drives what government can—or cannot do—for the people.

A better teaching and learning experience.

This program provides a better teaching and learning experience—for you and your students. Here’s how:

Personalize Learning. Reach every student at each stage of learning, engage them in active rather than passive learning, and measure that learning. Refined after a decade of real-world use and compatible with learning management systems like Blackboard, the new MyPoliSciLab is a customizable digital learning experience that supports each individual student’s and educator’s success.

Emphasize Outcomes. Keep students focused on what they need to learn. A new design facilitates print and digital reading experiences and turns this book’s learning objectives into a clear learning path. On MyPoliSciLab, practice tests help students achieve these objectives by creating personalized study plans.

Engage Students. Students—each one is different. Reachall of them with the new MyPoliSciLab Video Series, which features this book’s authors and top political scientists discussing the big ideas in each chapter and applying them to enduring political issues.

Improve Critical Thinking. Students get a lot of information about politics; your challenge as an instructor is to turn them into critical consumers of that information. Using interactive data to answer political questions introduced in this book’s infographics, Explorer is a hands-on way to develop quantitative literacy and to move students beyond punditry and opinion.

Analyze Current Events. Prepare students for a lifetime of following political news. Both in this book and on MyPoliSciLab, coverage of the 2012 elections and more keeps politics relevant and models how to analyze development in the American political system. Get up-to-the-minute analysis on MyPoliSciLab’s blogs or reflect on a theoretical case with a simulation.

Support Instructors. Make more time for your students with instructor resources—Test Bank, Instructor’s Manual, and PowerPoint Presentation with Classroom Response System (CRS)—that offer effective learning assessments and classroom engagement.

This Book a la Carte Edition is an unbound, three-hole punched, loose-leaf version of the textbook and provides students the opportunity to personalized their book by incorporating their own notes and taking the portion of the book they need to class — all at a fraction of the bound

Government in America, 2006 Election Update, Twelfth Edition
George C. Edwards, III · Martin P. Wattenberg · Robert L. Lineberry

Government in America continues to offer its highly-praised public policy approach and “politics matters” theme. It has been updated with complete coverage of the 2006 midterm elections and other important topics, such as American foreign policy in the Middle East. Government in America illustrates the impact that government has on the daily lives of each and every American, motivating students to become active participants in all aspects of political life.

NEW TO THIS EDITION

Complete updated coverage of the 2006 midterm elections.

“Young People and Politics” boxes appear in each chapter and reinforce the book’s theme of “politics matters” by focusing on how young people matter to politics and how, in turn, politics matters to them. Some boxes illustrate how policies specifically impact young adults, while others show how their political behavior affects public policy.

FEATURES

“Making a Difference” boxes throughout the text present the stories and experiences of individuals involved in politics, showing the impact that even one person can have on government when they get involved.

“How You Can Make a Difference” boxes give students explicit, step-by-step advice on how they can get involved and foster change in our system.

“You Are the Policymaker” boxes throughout the text put students in the role of policymaker, asking them to analyze an issue and reach a policy decision.

“Issues of the Times” boxes offer selections from The New York Times and ask students to think critically about the news and how it affects them. Each of these two-page spreads is accompanied by an introduction, pedagogy that emphasizes key points in the article, and critical reading questions to guide students through the issues of the day.

He has held visiting appointments at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Peking University in Beijing, Hebrew University in Jerusalem, the University of London, and the University of Wisconsin in Madison. When he determined that he was unlikely to become shortstop for the New York Yankees, he turned to political science. Today, he is one of the country's leading scholars of the presidency and has authored dozens of articles and written or edited 16 books on American politics and public policy making, including Changing Their Minds? The Failure of the Bully Pulpit; At the Margins: Presidential Leadership of Congress; Presidential Approval; Presidential Leadership; National Security and the U.S. Constitution, and Implementing Public Policy. Professor Edwards has served as president of the Presidency Research Section of the American Political Science Association and is editor of Presidential Studies Quarterly. He has received the Decoration for Distinguished Civilian Service from the U.S. Army and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. A frequent speaker at universities around the country, he often lectures abroad as well. Dr. Edwards also applies his scholarship to practical issues of governing, including advising Brazil on its constitution, Russia on building a democratic national party system, and Chinese scholars on democracy, and authoring studies for the 1988 and 2000 U.S. presidential transitions. When not writing, speaking, or advising, he prefers to spend time with his wife, Carmella, sailing, skiing, scuba diving, traveling, or attending art auctions.

Martin P. Wattenberg is a professor of Political Science at the University of California, Irvine. His first regular paying job was with the Washington Redskins, from which he moved on to receive a Ph.D. at the University of Michigan. While at Michigan, Professor Wattenberg wrote The Decline of American Political Parties (Harvard University Press), currently in its sixth edition. He is also the author of The Rise of Candidate-Centered Politics. In addition, he has contributed many professional articles to journals such as the American Political Science Review, American Journal of Political Science, American Politics Quarterly, and Public Opinion Quarterly. Professor Wattenberg has lectured about American politics on all of the inhabited continents. His travels have led him to become interested in electoral politics around the world. He recently co-edited two books -- one on party systems in the advanced industrialized world, and the other on the recent trend toward mixed-member electoral systems.

Robert L. Lineberry is professor of political science at the University of Houston and has been its senior vice president. He served from 1981 to 1988 as dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Kansas in Lawrence. He is the author or coauthor of numerous books and articles in political science. In addition, for the past 35 years he has taught regularly the introductory course in American government. He has been married to Nita Lineberry for 35 years. They have two children, Nikki, who works in Denver, Colorado, and Keith, who works in Houston, Texas. They have three grandchildren -- Lee, Callie, and Hunter.
