In 1630, along with hundreds of other settlers, John Winthrop left England for the New World. Because of his ardent Puritan beliefs and natural talent for government and politics, he was appointed governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony. About the Author:
Award-winning historian Edmund S. Morgan is Sterling Professor of History Emeritus at Yale, where he taught American history for 30 years. He has written more than 15 books on early American history and is a regular contributor to the New York Review of Books.
