Kindergarten-Grade 2-- Greedy King Glut has a voracious appetite for eggs. When he learns that there is only one dodo egg remaining in the world, he is determined that it shall be his--to eat. On the way to the remote island on which the egg is hidden, he and his chef encounter the captain of the ship Green Dove (an obvious allusion to Greenpeace), who cautions the king to protect the egg should he find it. They finally arrive on the island to find they are too late. The dodo egg is hatching! Smitten by this newly hatched creature, King Glut vows that eggs shall never again be eaten in his realm. They all depart , leaving the dodo in its solitude. This droll story will entertain most children. The rather surrealistic illustrations are fresh and attractive, starting with the brilliant end papers. Rich hues of mustard, sand, sage green, and gun-metal gray are appropriate to the stylized depictions. The text, whether it appears on a full page or half page, is framed by a fine black line and decorated with a small colorful scene which keeps the story moving along. The full-page illustrations are also neatly framed. King Glut, although described as greedy, and indeed he does have very messy table manners, presents a rather benign, egglike countenance. The island scenes are lush and Rousseau-like, with marvelous palm trees that bear an amazing resemblance to Egyptian columns.
