He is the author of Caught Image: Figurative Language in Henry James, The Henry James Encyclopedia (Greenwood Press, 1989), Thomas Crawford and of critical biographies of Richard Henry Dana, Jr., Francis Parkman, John Hay, Luke Short, Henry W. Allen, and Louis L'Amour. His essays have appeared in a wide range of scholarly journals.
