In mid-eighteenth century New Zealand, the tangled strands of kinship and desire control the life of Daisy Morgan, a doctor who struggles with both prejudice and her love for an unattainable man

From Publishers Weekly:
Daisy, the daughter of Rhys Morgan, wealthy sheepman and master of Mists of Heavens estate in Christchurch, New Zealand, is a romantically troubled 18-year-old, nurturing love for her long-absent cousin, Andrew, studying medicine in London. Daisy's cosseted life begins to change when Rhys marries his longtime mistress, and brings into their circle a young horse trader who must bide his time for Daisy's affection. A dramatic change occurs when the newly widowed Andrew returns, but he is no more available to Daisy than before once the secret of his parentage is revealed: he is Rhys's son from the liaison described in Kalman's novel Mists of Heaven and , therefore , Daisy's half-brother. While both are estranged from their father, Daisy pursues a career in medicine, rebelling against Victorian mores. The intergenerational family relationships are deftly handled, and the story is made unusually appealing by the New Zealand author's interweaving of the Maori culture in Anglo lives.

From Library Journal:
Kalman's lively sequel to Mists of Heaven (St. Martin's, 1988), set in late 19th- century New Zealand, finds her thwarted lovers Lisabeth and Rhys married at last. Suffering pangs of jealousy, Rhys's spoiled daughter Daisy convinces herself that she is desperately in love with Lisabeth's brother, Andrew. Unknown to Daisy, however, Andrew is actually Rhys's son and thus her half-brother. Predictable complications ensue: separated by her infatuation from her family and the man who really loves her, Daisy goes to England and becomes a doctor. Returning home, she finds she must fight for both her love and the right to practice medicine. Written with a light touch, this entertaining family saga offers neatly convoluted plotting and attractive, if not terribly original, characters. Libraries owning the first title will want this.
