From Booklist:
Born with severe cerebral palsy, Carolyn Martin struggled with an intelligent brain trapped inside a spasmodic body; she had limited power to communicate. Entering the school system, she became frustrated with the teachers' ignorance of her intellectual abilities. After moving to Alaska at the age of ten, Martin encountered difficulties living in a dilapidated shack with her family, who sometimes lost patience with her explosive outbursts. Feeling she was the cause of family conflicts, Martin convinced herself she was a "bad girl." Treated as an imbecile, barred from educational opportunities, and even sexually abused by a minister, Carolyn had every reason to be angry and lose hope. Through her faith in God and the help of Christian friends, however, she overcame her emotional trauma and found inner peace. God's providence opened doors of opportunity which revealed her natural intelligence and resulted in a writing career. This book, full of humor, sorrow, and courage, is not a plea for sympathy; pity would be an insult to this woman who has triumphed over seemingly insurmountable difficulties. An asset to any collection. Patty O'Connell
