Originating in Austin and carried on 280 PBS TV stations around the country, the popular country music series Austin City Limits concentrates on regional music drawn from Cajun, Creole, Mexican-American, black, mountain and cowboy traditions. Since 1975, "Austin City Limits" has showcased performances that ranged from country and bluegrass music through blues and jazz. Country music has always been the dominant fare, however, and the author asserts that the show has played an influential role in the contemporary music scene. The "outlaw" sound popularized by Willie Nelson and others in the mid-70s was Texas-bred, and ACL helped to legitimize and expand this music far beyond its initial regional appeal. Pictures of the entertainers who have appeared on ACL fill over half the book. The text is a season-by-season chronicle of the development and production of a high-quality TV show.
