En écrivant en tête de ce mémoire Ipsa Draparnaudz' Conchylia, nous avons, comme on peut le voir, appliqué à l'oeuvre de Draparnaud le même titre que Sylvanus Hanley avait, dès 1855, imposé à l'oeuvre de Linné Grâce au beau travail du célébre naturaliste anglais, nous connaissons désor mais de la façon la plus nette et la plus précise cette précieuse collection du grand maître suédois; nous savons maintenant, comment il convient d'interpréter ses textes, quelle valeur peuvent avoir ses types, de quelle façon il comprenait le genre et l'espèce. Pour arriver à son but, Hanley écrivit ses pages d'après les échantillons mêmes de la collection de Linné, conservée avec un soin jaloux dans les galeries de Londres. Mais l'oeuvre de Linné s'appliquait à toute la conchyliologie, du moins telle qu'on la comprenait alors. Nos prétentions seront plus modestes, et nous allons, à notre tour, essayer de faire pour Draparnaud, le créateur de la Conchyliologie française.
