Telle était donc la physionomie générale des forêts lorraines au xvie siècle: dans la montagne, les sapins sontjardinés, comme ils le sont encore aujourd'hui° dans la-plaine, les feuillus sont exploités â d'assez courtes révolutions, et s'ils sont distingués en futaies et taillis, c'est uniquement d'après l'importance plus ou moins grande des gros bois qu'ils contiennent. Nous ne voulons pas dire cependant qu'il n'existait point de futaies pleines on devait en trouver certainement, mais seulement dans les lieux où n'avaient pas pénétré les exploitations régulières. Ce qui nous semble certain, c'est qu'aux yeux des forestiers d'alors, le massif plein en haute futaie n'était pas le but vers lequel devait tendre le traitement des feuillus ou des résineux. Il nous reste à marquer maintenant le caractère des règle ments du xvi° siècle, et leurs conséquences pour la situation forestière du pays.
