Otherwise a very good and clean copy. - In July 1945 the Education Branch of the British Element of the Control Commission for Germany established its headquarters in Westphalia and assumed control over German education in the British Zone and the British Sector of Berlin. In the following month its task was set out in the Potsdam Agreement: "German education shall be so controlled as completely to eliminate Nazi and militarist doctrines and to make possible the successful development of democratic ideas". Now, a generation later, the Federal Republic is a flourishing democracy and many of its citizens look back with appreciation to the contribution which the education officers of the British Zone made towards educational reconstruction during the Occupation. This book is a record of that work written for the most part by those who carried it out. They tell a story of countless struggles to enable children to be housed, clothed and fed, to reopen schools and universities in the remains of shattered buildings, to train youth leaders and teachers, in short to rebuild the educational system.
