Book Description Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Dustjacket flap: This is the true story of a wild pony called Tommy, and of a marvellous - if unpredictable - summer spent breaking him in. Caroline Silver bought Tommy for £30; the money was provided by the Daily Telegraph Magazine, which had commissioned her to write an article on training a young pony. He was three years old, a native cross-bred, and only 11.2 hands high: small enough, Caroline felt incorrectly, to be easy to handle. He did a lot of things that a pony isn't supposed to do. To begin with, he was so shy that it took all afternoon to catch him. Then an illness, during which he had to be nursed in the toolshed while the tools grew rusty in the rain, forced him to rely on Caroline completely. The resulting bond between pony and trainer made lessons easy, though Caroline was occasionally concerned by the readiness with which Tommy would walk into people's houses, by his ingenious escapes from his field and wanton trespassing on farmers' crops, and by his deplorable taste in horse friends. In six months, Tommy changed from a shy, ignorant little animal into a confident and reliable friend who would make any child happy. He learned lungeing, long reining, to carry a rider, the rein-back, the forehand turn, leading off on either leg at a canter, jumping, and to go freely, mounted, across country. He became perfect in traffic and tolerant of childish pranks. His kindness won him many friends, and his mischievous spirit made him a local character. Summer with Tommy can be read as a touching animal story or as a careful instruction book for any young rider to follow. Conveying all the excitement of breaking and riding a pony, in words and photographs, it will captivate both young and old. ---------------------------------------- 112 pages with b/w photographs ---------- Orders of $100.00 or more are shipped using tracked courier delivery services.
