About the Author:

Marion Tinling worked at the Huntington Library in San Marino, California, for many years and has been an editor with the California State Department of Education. She is the author of Women Remembered: A Guide to Landmarks of Women?s History in the United States and Women into the Unknown: A Sourcebook on Women Explorers and Travelers.

The premise of this anthology of 27 women travelers' accounts in America essentially places women as direct authors of history by presenting observations distinct from those made by their male counterparts. These women, primarily from Western Europe, came to the new world to recover their health, to make fortunes for themselves and their families, and out of sheer curiosity for the foliage, animals, and natives (Indians) and imported inhabitants (slaves). While the majority of the women included are not famous, all of their accounts have been previously published. Despite very short selections, editor Tinling, a contributor to several encyclopedias, presents a nicely constructed anthology, primarily suited for classroom use and for smaller libraries that cannot acquire 27 accounts in their full form.
