Harold Fletecher was a young zoologist when he joined expeditions to the Antarctic region, in 1929 and 1931, both led by the noted Australian southern polar explorer Sir Douglas Mawson. The expeditions were supported by Great Britain, Australia and New Zealand and known as the BANZ Antarctic Research Expedition. This detailed account of the two expeditions, which encountered all the perils, hardships and challenges of such ventures, when afloat or on the ice, is based on the dairies Fletcher kept, which contain much more informal detail than other, earlier accounts of the two expeditions. It was only when the author re-read his dairies more than 50 years after he compiled them that he considered their publication. In his preface to the book Fletcher said it was ".an attempt to make known the everyday experiences and the more intimate domestic life and feelings of the expedition's 37 members, always in close contact with one another on board the relatively small vessel Discovery. It is a story of a concerted effort in which everyone worked together as a team in a spirit of comradship always more accentuated when conditions became most trying and hazardous." Each of these points, and many more, are graphically recorded in this enlightening account of Antarctic exploration in the 1920s and '30s.The first voyage lasted from October 1929 to April 1930 and the second from November 1930 to March 1931.
