And when these weren't available they hitched on whatever came along: wagons loaded with cement, copper trucks .. . even tractors! There were moments of fear-being arrested in Tanzania and confronted by armed peasants in Ethiopia. There was the drama of being chased by a wild elephant, of being delirious with dysentery in the Sudanese deserts and of hiring their very own mercenary. But there were also great wonders to experience: the awe-inspiring Victoria Falls, the great herds of wild game on the rolling plains of East Africa and Egypt's magnificent Valley of the Kings. They passed through areas which are now highly volatile because of guerilla activity-so dangerous that their trek could be the last of its kind for a considerable time.
