Synopsis

To the superficial observer, Pakistan's involvement in the Afghan conflict with the USSR was the outcome of an ideological alliance. This study seeks to establish that the roots of this involvement led away from both Afghanistan and ideology to Pakistan's neighbor to the east. The question that is central to this study: did Pakistan have the option of signing an agreement with the USSR between 1983 and 1985 that would end the hostilities?

About the Author:

Gilles Boquerat is the author of No Strings Attached? He is the head of the department of international relations at the Centre de Sciences Humaines in New Delhi and a member of the Centre for Indian and South Asian Studies in Paris. Frederic Grare is the author of Political Islam in the Indian Subcontinent and the coeditor of Beyond the Rhetoric: The Economics of India's Look East Policy and Essays on Sustainable Development. He is a cultural counselor at the French Embassy in Pakistan and is a former director of the Centre de Sciences Humaines in New Delhi.
