From School Library Journal:
Grade 2-5 One rabbit, who lives alone, meets a second, and their desire to have a family quickly leads to a prolif eration of offspring. The resulting overcrowding ends in a grand melee as the rabbits kick, hit, wallop, thump, scratch, and bite each other. The gar den becomes desolate, but when spring arrives there are two left. ``They thought it would be nice to have a family. . . .'' Quaintly stylized illustrations in a romantically British tradition, in colored pencil and water colors, complement the allegory, re flecting both the tranquil contentment of the pair of rabbits in the garden as well as the biting frustration during the overcrowding brawl. The insertion of pages with a trio of small illustrations adds focus and action. Alas, the lan guage is as disappointing as the sim plistic text and the use of numbers to name the offspring denegrates the Genesis-like interpretation. A clever but unsuccessful attempt to convey to children the effects of overpopula tion. Ronald Jobe, University of Brit ish Columbia, Vancouver, Canada
