About the Author:
ALEXANDER STADLER is the author-illustrator of Lila Bloom and Duncan Rumplemeyer's Bad Birthday, as well as to the Beverly books. He lives in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

PreS-Gr. 2. For a week before Oliver's party, Beverly dreams, plans, and prepares to make a delectable Caramel Candy Castle Cake for her friend's birthday. While helping her mother bake the cake, though, Beverly fails to grease the pan and her mother must cut the layers in half to remove them. Devastated, Beverly disintegrates emotionally until her mother suggests a more creative way of coping with this culinary glitch. Children will recognize their own feelings in Beverly's emotional states: the bliss of gazing at the cake pictured in her book ("like stepping into a magical world"), the satisfaction of taking 45 minutes to choose the perfect candies to decorate it, and the despair when her dream is destroyed by her own mistake. The story moves along well, illustrated by Stadler's distinctive ink-and-gouache artwork. A simple cake recipe is appended, and adult assistance is recommended.
