There are six eggs in Mother Hen’s nest, but--Chip! Chip! Chip! Chip! Chip!--only five eggs hatch! The sixth egg goes on a high-rolling adventure across the barnyard, past the pig and the tomato patch, and, finally, into Mother Hen’s waiting wings. What a wild ride! Lisa Campbell Ernst’s bold, energetic illustrations transform a short trip across the barnyard into a rollicking good time.

From Library Journal:
Grade 1-2-Three serviceable easy-readers. Repetitive phrases and picture clues make these titles accessible to children, while sophisticated vocabulary ("boastful") and the use of similes ("soft as silk") add interest and challenge. Each story has a simple plot (animals chase an egg as it rolls through the farmyard, a lost cat comes back with her new kittens, and a bragging kangaroo gets its comeuppance) and all three have large, bright, cartoon illustrations. A "Meet the Author" section inside the back cover is an added feature.
