PreSchool-Grade 1-- A picture book with a clever premise. Ten perky cows in bright dotted jumpsuits compete in a nighttime contest to jump over a gleaming crescent moon. But one after another, using such devices as a trapeze, a pogo stick, a giant slingshot, and a diving board, they fail. The tenth attempt succeeds with the help of a simple wooden vaulting pole, and a gala celebration follows. The amusing rhymed text, narrated by Angus Le Boeuf, the host/ringmaster of the contest, contains many puns and witty names to entertain listeners. Cartoon-style collages in ink, tempera, and colored pencil are arranged in four panels on each double-page spread as the crisply outlined, colorfully dressed cows cavort against a deep, blue night sky. Meanwhile, counting down from ten to one is emphasized with clear numerals and a diminishing number of cows' heads, as they wait to compete, appearing in the stable windows pictured above each contestant's individual effort.
