Grade 5-9-- Prolific Sachs succeeds once again in this story of twins Dee and Dezzy, 13, who have nothing in common but their birthday. Blonde, tall Dee tries to be sophisticated beyond her years, is in the popular crowd, loves to shop, and makes the honor roll; short, dark Dezzy still enjoys childhood games, likes nothing better than jogging with her father, and has a learning disability. While Dezzy seems to be the immature one, she is able to find a solution to a family crisis, and to make a real difference at school by starting a recycling club. In a nice touch of irony, Dezzy matures physically first, even though her emotional and social maturity lags behind. Told from her point-of-view, the novel validates her uniqueness and her bravery in choosing to be different. At the end, as the girls approach their 14th birthday, they are very much individuals who have learned both to appreciate each other and to compromise. With her usual skillful characterization, Sachs ably captures the often painful disparity among young teens as puberty arrives unannounced.
