Grade 1-4-- An attractive full-color photograph graces the cover of this dictionary, but the internal illustrations are small and lack visual appeal. The brief entries are comprised of simple, disjointed sentences, and don't have enough information to satisfy most readers. Dogs as pets are not discussed; the entry reads "Dogs are intelligent and sociable and often live together in large groups." Cross-references are inexact or misleading. Various animals, habitats, and body parts are included, but only one or two terms per page are illustrated. For a more appealing dictionary of animals, turn to Few's Animal Encyclopedia for Children (Macmillan, 1991) or Animals (Dorling Kindersley, 1991). --Margaret Tice, Brooklyn Public Library, NY
