An inclusive, contextual, and student-friendly way to discover the whole world of jazz.

Discover Jazz presents an inclusive overview of the history of jazz, with balanced coverage of the contributions of men and women from around the world. Emphasizing the importance of context, the text presents the story of jazz not as a simple narrative, but as a series of encounters among musicians, historical events, musical influences, and social forces. And, this student-friendly text gives readers the tools they need to actively listen to–and build their own relationships with–this great American art form.

About the Author:
John Edward Hasse is a music historian, pianist, and award-winning author and record producer.  Since 1984, he has served as Curator of American Music at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History, where he founded the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra and Jazz Appreciation Month.  He is the author of Beyond Category: The Life and Genius of Duke Ellington, and co-producer/co-author of the book-and-six-disc set Jazz: The Smithsonian Anthology.

Tad Lathrop has authored, produced, or edited more than 50 books on music, including Jazz: The First Century and two volumes on the music business. He has developed programming and content for Cherry Lane Music, MTV Networks, Billboard Books, and CBS; taught at City University of New York and San Francisco State University; and lectured on music at colleges and professional conferences.
Review:

"The most thorough and well-presented text on jazz history I've seen in a long time. This one has it all--the music, the analysis, the musicians, the socio-economic factors, and the foundation material needed to fully grasp the material."
-- John Davis, University of Colorado
"A well-detailed, richly illustrated, highly readable, and often compellingly written chronicle of the development and current status of jazz through revelation of the music's character of sound, aesthetic appeal, and connection to American society."
-- Richard Domek, American Music

"Hasse and Lathrop weave together musical and cultural analysis in a way that is clear, insightful, and entertaining. ... Jazz history textbooks bear a heavy burden, since they must make complicated musical and cultural issues accessible to both jazz performance majors and students with no musical training. With Discover Jazz, Hasse and Lathrop show that the study of music and culture can come together to produce an informative and lively textbook."
-- John Behling,  Journal of Music Pedagogy

"An extremely thorough jazz history text that provides the expected chonological jazz timeline while offering a wealth of historical and cultural context."
-- Barry Long, Bucknell University

"Clear conceptual guidance and a vocabulary for developing listening skills."
-- Allen Livermore, Berkshire Community College

"This book walks the fine line of social, political, musical, and historical aspects of the twentieth century better than any other jazz text I have read."
-- Jim Scully, California State University, Bakersfield
