This text is the primary recommendation of the UK Engineering Council Faculty of Technology to all British universities as of approved standard and quality for use as a text for the Board's own examinations. Introduces the fundamental concepts and principles of statics and stress analysis. The mathematics is at all times kept as straightforward as possible, with worked examples used to reinforce the understanding of key concepts. Although much emphasis is currently laid on designing structures using methods dependent on computers, it is still necessary for engineers to be able to interpret computer outputs. This book therefore applies the concepts and principles introduced to a large number of practical problems that do not require computers. Liberal use of free-body diagrams to help problem solving as well as coverage of composite materials. Contains the torsion of circular and non-circular sections and the matrix-displacement method.
