Honig, a prolific writer of baseball history, presents another in what appears to be a growing series of individual illustrated major league team histories ( Yankees, Mets) , this dealing with the darlings of New England. A sympathetic, noncritical work, it traces the Red Sox chronologically from their beginnings in the infant American League in 1901 through their recent years of glory but great disappointment to their fans. No team in major league baseball seems to have as rabid and faithful a following, albeit one that has not had a World Series champion since 1918. The short statistical section at the end of the book adds little for any but the most novice fan. Public and school libraries in New England will want this; others should buy as interest dictates. Photos not seen.
