Review:
Nutrition and exercise are only two pieces of the puzzle of how to get fit and lose weight, writes Michael Gerrish. The other "UFOs" ("unidentified fitness obstacles") are barriers to getting fit. These might involve sleep, work addiction, food allergies, or a number of medical or emotional conditions or lifestyle issues.

Gerrish, an exercise physiologist, personal trainer, and psychotherapist, gives a self-test to see which of the 58 UFOs are yours and describes how you can conquer each one. He includes exercise information, with descriptions and illustrations of recommended strength training and stretching exercises, and a general diet plan. He also describes energy block acutherapy, a self-help breathing and tapping sequence to treat fears, addictions, cravings, self-sabotage, and post-traumatic stress.

More than one-third of the book is devoted to "The Makeovers"--stories of real people who "stumbled, fell down, and got up many times, transforming themselves as a result." We get to know these people through their journal entries, photos, and communications with Gerrish as they progress through their 12-week program.

Gerrish is married to personal coach Cheryl Richardson, author of Take Time for Your Life and Life Makeovers. The Mind-Body Makeover Project is recommended for people who struggle with weight loss and are ready to look at the bigger picture. --Joan Price

From the Back Cover:

You've heard it many times before: "This is the diet and weight-loss program that will finally work for you." Time after time hopes are raised and then dashed as the programs fail. Well, it's time to stop torturing yourself! The reason why all of these programs don't work is that they are missing the point: Addressing your inner obstacles is the key to getting in shape. Discover the real issues sabotaging your fitness goals and learn what you need to do to end this cycle once and for all. The Mind-Body Makeover Project will show you exactly how.

Tracing the success stories of seven real people, The Mind-Body Makeover Project offers new hope for the "fitness impaired." Through the in-depth stories, fitness pro and therapist Michael Gerrish shows how these people overcame their obstacles and how you can, too. He reveals the truth that it's not your fault if you've struggled to get into shape--Unidentified Fitness Obstacles (UFOs) may be what are holding you back. Identifying and addressing your UFOs is the key to long-lasting success.

Featuring dramatic yet realistic before-and-after photographs of the makeover participants, The Mind-Body Makeover Project reveals:

  • A comprehensive self-test to help you identify which Unidentified Fitness Obstacles (UFOs) are preventing your success, including hormone imbalances, ADD, insulin instability, food allergies and intolerances, sleep apnea, toxic relationships, and many more
  • An in-depth look at how each makeover subject conquered his or her UFOs, providing you with insight into how to overcome yours
  • How "being selfish" and taking time for yourself to exercise will actually help you be more productive at home and at work
  • Flexible exercise plans and nutritional guidelines to follow, including the latest research on why slow-movement weight training provides faster and better results
  • A holistic approach that incorporates image and lifestyle concerns as well as emotional health

Getting in shape and developing self-esteem is an inside job. Lead a more rewarding and fulfilling life in just twelve short weeks with The Mind-Body Makeover Project as your companion, coach, and guide.
