Very few original diaries of Civil War dates exist; yet the authors were privileged to have two complete ones to include in this book The first diary was kept by Col. Given Campbell from Dec. 1860 - Dec. 1861. The second was kept by both Given and his Miss Elizabeth Woods. The colorful descriptions, local events, and personal glimpses create for the reader a sense of being in antebellum Missouri, going through the daily trials and tribulations, and pursuing love in the chivalrous South. Between these two diaries is the amazing war correspondence of the Campbells and their families. The rigors of Civil War camp life, the loneliness of a soldier's existence, personal glimpses of Generals Hood, Wheeler, Morgan, Forrest and Blair, and the emotions of a young, betrothed couple separated by four long years of genocide provide a romantic love story told the couple themselves.
