From School Library Journal:
Grade 1-5-Joining the six other clever "corn poetry" books, this one offers new surprises, all cleverly shaped and illustrated. The subjects are familiar-dogs, peanut butter, trees on a sidewalk-yet Stevenson helps readers see them in fresh and funny ways. For example, in one selection, the author offers this advice "To People I Hear Talking Loudly on Their Cell Phones": "-drop it in/a deep pot of chicken fat/and bring to a boil./Simmer for two hours./Let cool." Often the full meaning of the poem depends upon the illustration, as in "Rough Guess": "Do you ever/wonder how/much peanut/butter you/have had/in your life?/I have had/ THIS much,/and I am about to buy another jar." Here a tiny figure of Stevenson gestures toward a mammoth jar that fills the page. Readers will giggle over the silly guesses about what could possibly be in the children's oversized backpacks in "Backpack Mystery" and understand the wisdom of "Doorknobs": "If you look/in the locksmith's window,/you'll see there is more/than one way to open a door." The final poem, "The Loudest Noise in the World," pulls the anticipated "corn" into this book: "There's/a noise/so loud,/there is/nothing/louder-/than Uncle Carl eating/his sweet corn chowder." This lovable collection of poems and whimsical watercolors will bring smiles and a new perspective to the common things around us.
