About the Author:

Charlotte Zolotow—author, editor, publisher, and educator—has one of the most distinguished reputations in the field of children's literature. She has written more than seventy books, many of which are picture-book classics, such as Mr. Rabbit and the Lovely Present and William's Doll. She lives in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York.

Stefano Vitale's award-winning artwork appears in galleries and exhibitions as well as in such picture books as When the Wind Stops, by Charlotte Zolotow (an ALA Notable Book). Mr. Vitale is a graduate of the University of Southern California and of the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. He lives with his family in Venice, Italy.

Other animals and insects sleep also, and finally, little boys and girls ``sleep warm under their blankets in their beds.'' Each double page is a meditation on one kind of sleeper, with colored pencil drawings so wonderfully soft that they seem to have been rubbed into the white pages. Some of the creatures' sleep is easy to imaginekittens stretched out purring in the sun, for example, but others are not. Fish, ``among the green water ferns with their eyes and mouths wide open,'' challenge children's very idea of sleep. Plume's full-page drawings on the right are windows into a great green room of childhood from which human sleepyheads can look outward onto an enchanting world of nature. Her top and bottom borders on the left pages frame the spare, poetic narrative.
