When Scarface, a 20-foot rogue white shark reappears, Uncle Harry interests a shark hunter in hiring his boat, and the cousins go along to cook. The preparations and attempts at hooking the shark are grippingly de scribed. Their second attempt ends in disaster when the boat catches on fire; Meg, Joe, and Meg's badly burned and injured father land on an island without any means of getting help. How the cousins cope under stress and impro vise their survival and rescuethe shark and other shadows fading to the backgroundis the focus of the last four chapters. The resolutions are al most a let-down after the melodramatic piling up of calamities, but this Austra lian author has written a real page-turn er that might even be considered for reluctant readers.
