From School Library Journal:
Grade 6-10-- Students researching the Iberian Peninsula will find their spirits rising when they come across this comprehensive volume, the bulk of which is devoted to a detailed history of this country of varied terrain and ethnic background. Shubert's prose is well phrased and stylish, but dry. Nonetheless, he gives a feel for the people and the conflicts that have formed this nation. The frequent use of Spanish poetry and prose to illustrate the way these people view their country demonstrates a masterful melding of historical narrative and literature. As such, it is applicable to use in integrated curricula. The format is somewhat cluttered, with the text interrupted by fact boxes and inserted information. However, the book is unparalled as a report source, and if students read it cover to cover (unlikely, alas), they will come away with a deepened understanding both of Spain and of the way history molds national character. Black-and-white photographs, an extensive narrative bibliography (adult titles), and a brief filmography and discography are included. Miller's Spain (Chelsea, 1989) and Bristow's We Live in Spain (Bookwright, 1984) are both for a slightly younger audience. While less imposing looking than this one, they lack depth by comparison. --Ann Welton, Terminal Park Elementary School, Auburn, WA

From Kirkus Reviews:
Distilling vast quantities of data, Shubert emphasizes Spain's varied history; more than 80% of this book concerns the diverse peoples, literature, and politics in its past. The author places facts and thorough scholarship alongside more capricious hearsay; at least once, he ventures into less-than-objective commentary concerning the character of regional peoples, attributing such phrasing to the Spanish themselves. Still, a mostly credible (if relatively difficult) addition to the ``Portraits of the Nations'' series, dense with information for the determined reader.
