Toby is at it again.

When Toby and his parents go on a picnic, there's no telling who he'll pretend to be. An owl? A bat? A turtle? Can you guess?

One thing is for sure: There's lots of fun in store for Toby -- and you!

About the Author:
William Steig's drawings appeared regularly in The New Yorker since 1930. He also wrote and illustrated books for children, most recently his memoir, When Everybody Wore a Hat. His other books include Sylvester and the Magic Pebble, winner of the Caldecott Medal; The Amazing Bone, a Caldecott Honor Book; and Abel's Island and Doctor De Soto, both Newbery Honor Books; Doctor De Soto Goes to Africa; Pete's A Pizza; and Zeke Pippin.

Teryl Euvremer has written and illustrated several picture books. In addition to Toby, What Are You?, she is also the illustrator of Toby, Where Are You?, both by William Steig. She lives in Paris.
From School Library Journal:
PreSchool-Grade 2–Toby and his parents' picnic is no ordinary outdoor dining experience, for the furry little master of disguises introduced in Toby, Where Are You?(1997) and Toby, What Are You?(2001, both HarperCollins) is up to his usual tricks. This time he pretends to be different animals. As he rides on his father's shoulders on the way to the picnic spot, he announces, "Dad, you're a camel. And I'm your hump." Subsequently, using the lunch provisions and the natural setting, Toby transforms himself into a wild bull, a cobra, a bat, a pig, a chameleon, a woodpecker, an owl, and a snail. And he shouts exuberantly, "Got you that time" when his parents mistake a real turtle under a hat for their mischievous son. They enter wholeheartedly into the game, and, later, do some pretending of their own when their little guy wants some after-bath kisses. Euvremer's familiar pastel palette and impressionistic pictures suggest an idyllic afternoon enjoyed by a loving family. This is a fun game of "let's pretend" from a recently deceased author who will be sorely missed.–Marianne Saccardi, Norwalk Community College, CT
