From School Library Journal:
PreSchool-Grade 1-Wood's minimal text and clear, bright paintings add up to an effective counting book. The sets of creatures are shown frolicking against a bright white background, which makes them stand out for ease in counting, even when the group contains 101 elephants on fold-out pages. Brief descriptive phrases use alliteration and some rhyme to characterize the various species, such as "neck-stretchy, long-leggy, pecky, feathery ostriches." The counting units extend beyond the standard, picture book 10 or 12 to provide additional practice. The good-humored interactions among the animals suggest many potential discussions about relationships and activities. The bouncy text and clear illustrations make the book a natural for story hours. Eager counters or animal lovers will enjoy perusing the book on their own as well. Count this title a winner.

From Booklist:
Ages 3-5. What this counting book has going for it is sheer exuberance. Moving from 1 slow tortoise to 101 powerful, playful pachyderms, Wood's menagerie features animals that are hopping, flying, swinging, and splish-splashing across the pages. The book does the traditional 1 to 10 count, then moves on to multiples with the big final foldout of all those elephants. Wood's watercolors are a delight. There is a wide array of animals, including monkeys, tigers, and kangaroos, but they are individualized, and sometimes their colors don't match anything in nature. Though most libraries have a full complement of counting books, this one demands room be made for one more. Ilene Cooper
