From School Library Journal:
Grade 4-6 Sarah's mother accepts a temporary illustrating job in Kentucky and moves from New York, taking Sarah with her and leaving her husband behind. In Kentucky she works nonstop, leaving Sarah to fend for herself in the alien environment of a small southern town and a school where new students are rare. The story deals with Sarah's attempts to make friends and reunite her parents. While much of the book shows an understanding of children's concerns and emotions, the book has some problems, the primary one being its choppiness. As soon as a subject is introduced, there is either a lengthy, distracting aside or another totally unrelated subject is interjected and the first one abruptly dropped. For example, on a single page, readers finds Sarah on the morning of the first day of school hoping she will run into Annette (with whom she wants to become friends) on the way to school. Stiles then throws in two paragraphs on the habits of hummingbirds because Sarah has glanced at the nest that she can see from her window. Sarah then contemplates the way that the children in her mother's pictures do not resemble her even though she was the model. The page ends with her dentist's ideas on the relationship of well-formed teeth to the attractiveness of a person's face. Unfortunately this is typical of the entire book. Nancy P. Reeder, Heathwood Hall Episcopal School, Columbia, S.C.
