Fearful animals running from sounds of thunder are led back home by a young boy beating a drum.

From School Library Journal:
PreSchool-Grade 2 Thunder, the mysterious, overpowering sound that frightens nearly every child at one time or another, is depicted by Novak as a visible cloud-like force rolling down the mountain, into the forest, onto the meadow, scattering frightened animals in its path and then rolling away in the distance. A small child carrying a drum joins the running animals as the thunder rolls overhead and on further away. Then the boy rolls a beat on his drum to lead the now happy beasts back to their woodland and mountain homes. Alone, the child continues on to his home at the top of the mountain. The watercolor illustrations are pleasant with realistic animals and a charming child. Incongruous even for picture book fantasy, however, is a white frame house with a picket fence surrounding a green lawn set atop a rocky peak springing forth from the nearly barren land below. More satisfying for children who need comfort from storms is Thunderstorm (Bradbury, 1985) by Mary Szilagyi; the more humorous approach in Hippo Thunder (Whitman, 1980) by Susan Sussman; Robert L. Crowe's delightful Tyler Toad and the Thunder (Dutton, 1980); or the fine scientific explanation in Franklyn M. Branley's Flash, Crash, Rumble, and Roll (Crowell, 1985).Virginia Opocensky, Lincoln City Libraries, Nebr.

From Publishers Weekly:
When thunder comes rolling across the sky, it chases a herd of assorted animals out of the forest to the meadow, where they encounter a child with a drum. The thunder passes and the child plays drum rolls to lead the animals home. Novak's lively pictures bear evidence of an original talent, but his story is slight; the text consists of two long sentences stretched out over 27 pages. The skimpy story line is unlikely to capture readers' imaginations; nor will the book help them handle their fear of thunder. The book has been elegantly produced, but its price tag may turn buyers away from a rather unformed story.
