Jonah's efforts to survive the third grade are complicated by the new boy in class, who has the potential for either becoming a friend or beating him up.

From School Library Journal:
Grade 2-4 Jonah knowshe has heard it so many timesthat he is slow, irresponsible and easily distracted. Only readers (who will quickly identify with him) can see that Jonah is careful, deliberate and creative. Jonah's desk-mate Granville is a new boy who is little, fierce, fast and the meanest kid Jonah has ever known. Mrs. Lacey, their third-grade teacher, is the most understanding and empathetic teacher a child could hope for. She encourages, seeking out Jonah's real thoughts and intents. She gently guides him into discovering that Granville is simply a boy desperate for a good friend. Mr. Rosetti, a neighbor is helpful, too, and he entrusts Jonah with a big responsibility. Other characters are not so well delineated, but the sensitively drawn Jonah will capture his readers. He may not be all new, but he gains a new sense of self and will surely be "responsible enough" for a kitten from the newborn litter at Granville's house. Honeycutt's low-key portrayal of familiar scenes is similar to that of Giff's "The Kids of Polk Street School" series (Dell) for the same age group. Katharine Bruner, Brown Middle School Library, Harrison, Tenn.

From Publishers Weekly:
The author of Invisible Lissa delivers another winner, a story about two extremely likable boys. Jonah Twist's ambition is to succeed as a third-grader, to be responsible so his mother will admire him, as she does his super-achiever older brother, Todd. But Granville Jones, a new kid at school, dims Jonah's hopes on the first day. Granville is tiny but tough; he grabs the seat next to Jonah and sticks like a burr. On the way home from school, the menace leaps from behind bushes and trees, scaring and enraging Jonah. Eventually, the boys' teacher sets up a private chat with Jonah and convinces him that Granville's pestering means he wants a friend. This is true; the young antagonists do become good friends. Honeycutt's novel is full of delightful surprises and enhanced by deft characterizations of adults as well as the children in her large cast.
