From Booklist:
Gr. 3^-4. Tom can read minds, make living maps of the continents, stop a baseball in midair, and fly. Adam Lee's new neighbor is out of this world--literally. Worse than being an alien, however, Tom (short for Tomasina) is a girl and doesn't "know that going-on-ten-year-old boys don't have girls for `best friends.'" But Tom proves that she can be Adam Lee's best friend when she coaches his baseball team, the Off-Beats, to a crushing victory over its rival, the Crushers. This is light and breezy science fiction fun, recommended for readers who have finished Matt Christopher's The Dog That Pitched a No-Hitter (1988) but are not quite ready for Bruce Coville's My Teacher Is an Alien (1990). It's too bad that the title gives the girl factor away upfront, because boys will enjoy this wacky sports story if they can overcome their antipathy for "girl books" to try this one. Annie Ayres
