Grade 3-5-- The McGurk Organization is back at work, and this time they're in training to provide witness-protection services. Their efforts prove to be timely when they find they have a real "witness" to protect, organization member Mari Yoshimura's cousin, drummer Yoshito Nakanishi. Yoshito is in hiding after an attempt on his life, and he has no idea why anyone would want to kill him. The McGurk members not only manage to hide him successfully, but also to help the police capture his pursuers. Told in the first person by Joey Rockaway, the member with a talent for words, the story is a pleasant, breezy read. The plot is straightforward and believable and avoids unnecessary complications and unconvincing heroics on the part of the young investigators. The characterization is largely good, although the villains seem stereotyped. The story stands on its own; Hildick skillfully incorporates necessary background information into it. Fans of the series will welcome this new addition, and new readers will be easily attracted, particularly those who are making the transition to chapter books. --Donna L.
