Grade 2-4-- Maggie is a spoiled younger sister who often makes her brother Harry say, "I hate my sister Maggie." When her pestering ruins an outing, or she rearranges his trains, kills his science experiment, or demands the one rose from his birthday cake, Harry objects. Then his mother tells Harry about her surprise--a new sibling is on the way; while Maggie will no longer be the youngest, Harry will still be the oldest. Black-and-white drawings throughout portray Harry and Maggie as normal siblings to whom most readers can relate. The adults, however, need to learn some parenting skills to help the children work together rather than create a large rift between them by always protecting Maggie at Harry's expense. Their inept handling of normal situations is so obvious that it may be intended to serve as a lesson.
